Women Preaching?

Words stand for something, right? The words we use in our Christian faith used to be fairly clear cut, but over the last few years some definitions seem to have become somewhat murky: evangelism, preaching, and how Christian women biblically fit into that equation. Amy and Michelle reprise this episode in advance of a new series on unbiblical women’s teachers next week!

I loved the podcast. I am still confused about something. We are moving so we are visiting churches in the new area we will be living. We are reading statements of faith, etc. My husband and I like 2 churches so far. Our concern with one is the pastor’s wife read scripture in the service. Is that biblical?

      Hi Donna,
I’m thrilled you enjoyed the podcast. I will try to answer your question as biblically as I can in looking at 1 Timothy.

In Chapter 2 Paul tells Timothy women are not to teach or have authority over men. Is Scripture reading the same as teaching? Some believe that it is just reading words, while others believe that saying the very words of God in a pulpit/in front of the gathered saints is preparing for the sermon, and is on the same par as leading/teaching. In his same letter (chapter 4), Paul tells Timothy that as a preacher, he is to devote himself to three things: the public reading of Scripture, exhortation and teaching. So it seems that the verses about women in Chapter 2 applies to those things. Michelle may have some additional thoughts.
      God bless! — Amy

I will add that a solid church (reformed, Master’s Seminary pastor), I attended for a time a few years ago occasionally had women reading Scripture who were on the worship team and did this during musical interludes. I asked them about it and their position was as long as it wasn’t in the pulpit it was fine. So you’ll find some scenarios vary among churches.
