Talk Back: Lysa TerKeurst

How can we be discerning and “test the spirits,” as it says in 1 John 4:1-6? We do that by holding up everything we hear or read to the light of Truth found in God’s Word, to see if this comes from the Spirit of Truth or a spirit of error. We are kicking off an episode series called “Talk Back,” where we listen together to a presentation, a video or a sermon, and then compare what that speaker teaches to what God’s Word says. In this episode, we examine a teaching from a program called Therapy and Theology: Commonly Misunderstood Verses about Women, presented by popular teacher Lysa TerKeurst.

Thank you for talk back. Love the concept of Critiquing false teachers it helps to see where the errors are. I’ve learn so much from your website and podcast.

Thank you ladies for rightly discerning the Word of Truth, Obedience is obedience. Anything else is sin. Thank you ladies for all the work you do!

I would really like to hear your thoughts on this. I can totally understand why she is not recommended.

Thank you so much for this episode! I look forward to more in the future. I tried to listen to her video but was so disturbed by what she was saying. A few years ago I went through a tough time and was mad at God. I looked for whatever might help me feel better, including books by Lysa. I remember feeling like she “got” me. I am so grateful that a couple years ago I stumbled on Michelle’s website. I wish I could remember what I was searching, but I remember one of the searches led me to Michelle. I started reading about popular false teachers and was shocked. I kind of knew women shouldn’t be pastors but I didn’t really understand why. I knew I didn’t like certain charismatic preachers but didn’t know what bothered me. Today I turn to the Bible and lean on what it teaches. I am still learning about some of the false teachers and educating myself so that I can educate others. Some of the ladies in my church think Joyce Meyer is okay because “most” of what she says is good. I am trying to explain to them adequately why she is a false teacher regardless of the few scripturally sound teachings or how she makes them feel good. My husband and I also hope to sit down with our pastor. He is scripturally sound, but like many Baptists he fell into the trap of Experiencing God. Last year he led a study on it but only used the workbook. The workbook leaves out some of the blatant false teachings that are in the book. All this to say how grateful I am to have you both sharing the truth. I praise God for helping me daily. I have always been a reluctant Christian—I went to church but I was not comfortable sharing the gospel. Now I want to share it with everyone. I am still very shy, but I am getting some tracts and have set a goal to start sharing them. I am also sharing as best I can with my grown children and parents. We took our kids to church but didn’t live life as we should and stopped attending church in 2015, only going back in September 2022. God knows my sorrow in this and has heard my prayers for my kids salvation. My parents attend a church with a woman pastor and my dad says he doesn’t believe the whole Bible. I am working on how to politely and lovingly tell them that the WHOLE Bible is true and God breathed. Please pray that I will have the right words for my family or that someone will be put in their lives to lead them to the truth.

I’m sorry this got so long. You are both in my prayers and I hope some day I can attend a conference and meet you. God Bless you both!

P.S. I share some of what I learn from you with my husband but always tell him he needs to find a good podcast taught by a man. Any good recommendations?

Hello- thank you for this talk. I have a friend arguing with me in the same manner as the phone call Lysa spoke of, my friend is focused on experience and emotions. Saying I’m causing division because I’m testing her experience with scripture. Thanks for your faithfulness.

Thanks for listening, Paula, and for not sharing Lysa’s materials. Sadly, she does, indeed, create doubt and dissension. I’m glad you’ll be praying for her.
